SCENES FROM THE SHAMBLES

“Scene from the shambles”, is an installation work submitted as an assessment for the Philosophies of Imagination module. In creating this project, I was struck by Freud’s paper Creative Writers and Day-Dreaming and his mentioning that although playing is a sacred activity for children, play diminishes in importance as children grow up into adults.

To this, I set out to create a series of sculptures of enlarged children’s toys that would be suspended from the ceiling and wrapped in barbed wire to allude to how accessing one’s imagination as an adult is a tentative process as activities of play tend to be ‘othered’ within western hegemonic society.
